One of four Portland Stone Keystones removed from the facade of St Thomas'
Hospital in London, bearing the carved profile of Edith Cavell surmounted by a carved laurel wreath surrounding the Rod of Asclepius, the ancient Greek symbol for healing and medicine.
Early 20th century. A pair with SNo 13145 Florence Nightingale shown below.
Weight: 139kg.

Notes:Edith Cavell was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction during World War I, and for helping Allied soldiers to escape from German occupied Belgium. She was caught and arrested by the Germans, tried and found guilty of treason and was shot by a firing squad in October 1915.The Hospital was moved from it's 17th century site in Southwark to new buildings in Lambeth Palace Road, across the River Thames from The Houses of Parliament where it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871.
