Stock No.11642

An impressively majestic and immensely tall carved oak font cover in the Neo Renaissance manner. It is constructed and bolted together in 5 tiers with a total of 15 elements and it has a most attractive carved oak inner cover or lid that can be raised or lowered by means of the weight counter-balanced chain pulley.

Provenance:
The font cover, originally removed from the now redundant medieval church of St Nicholas, in the port of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, was designed by John Oldrid Scott around 1902-3 and is an accurate replica of the original cover of 1627 which was destroyed around1850 by a rather over-zealous incumbent. John Oldrid Scott was the son of Sir George Gilbert Scott, who designed the Steeple in 1860. The cover was bought by the Collectors World Museum, in Downham Market, Norfolk. The Museum was the lifes work of its creator Eric St John Foti, a great collector, who said at one time "Everything you see here is part of my life, or has been part of my life. I have never thrown anything away, and it shows of course!" When the Museum was under-going major renovation in 2010 the font cover along with other items was sold once more in order to make room for more additions to the collection.
