Stock No.15243

A rare cast iron, Rococo Revival, Coalbrookdale firegrate. The unusual serpentine, lobed back rests behind the bow fronted three bar basket. The apron, bearing a central zoomorphic mask, is flanked by scrolled acanthus enriched sides supported on splaying legs on block feet. The last image below is from an illustration in the Coalbrookdale Castings Catalogue, shown for use within their dramatic Shakespearean 'Tempest' figural chimneypiece. English, circa 1850.

Coalbrookdale is a village in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire, England, containing a settlement of great significance in the history of iron ore smelting. The Coalbrookdale Company and Foundry was established there by Abraham Darby in 1701.
