A very fine Italian white marble chimneypiece, profusely carved in the Renaissance Revival manner. The elegantly moulded shelf sits above a highly decorative frieze, the centre carved with mythical beasts with the heads of lions and the bodies of sea creatures. From these beasts emanate swirling acanthus leaves, and flowers with twisting stems. This is framed by the endblocks, carved with striking masks reminiscent of green men, but with winged cheeks. Supporting the endblocks are the wonderfully ornate jambs, a profusion of floral and foliate carving surmounted by classical urns. The similarly decorative spandrels framing the gently arched opening are centred by a beautiful high relief mask of a young woman with ribbons in her hair.
Italian, early 20th century.
