English, circa 1760.
Notes: The name limewood derives from Old English and German Linde and was the classic wood used by sculptors since the Middle Ages for its good carving qualities.

The Chateau au Maquis de la Valette Cheminee. This superb massive antique fireplace mantel, superbly carved in Pierre de Brume, a fine, hard & dense ivory coloured stone from the Tours region of France, is a very large Louis XV Rococo antique fireplace mantel. The styling is particularly grand and noble as befits the location of the original, destroyed by fire during the revolution, this being a 19th century replica made for the rebuilt Chateau. The style and scale of the piece, very fine, sharp carving and the attractive stone combine to make a most elegant and imposing chimneypiece in the best Louis XV tradition. Provenance: The original Medieval chateau and domaine of the Marquis de Valette at Pont St. Maxence, 50 miles north of Paris was severley damaged during the Revolution. It was rebuilt in the same style in the mid 19th century – see present day image attached. The chimneypieces were removed early during World War II when the German Wehrmacht garrisoned troops in the Chateau, they were never reinstalled. The Marquis de Valette accompanied La Fayette on his American adventures during the War of Independence.
French, circa 1850 (photo before restoration ).

Antique Fireplace Mantels and Chimneypieces in the Rococo Style of the 18th and 19th centuries. This delicate and playful style, regarded by some at the time as risqué, was established in the 1730’s in France and quickly became widespread throughout Europe. Rococo fireplaces, mantels and chimneypieces in marble, stone and wood ( frequently gilded in the 18th century ), were again prolific in the Rococo Revival period of the early to mid 19th century mostly in Italy and France but many fine and grand examples were exported in great numbers to England, Ireland and Scotland. During the reign of Louis XV and the preceding Regence period a more feminine frivolity and intimacy held sway in the arts as a reaction to the monumental formality of the Baroque period. In England and Germany the Rococo style came under the influence of the Oriental. This was evident in the chimneypiece mantels of Thomas Chippendale. At its best the Rococo style was meant to lighten the mood, to be enjoyed and to encourage gaiety and delight.
Our collection of Antique Rococo fireplaces, chimneypiece and mantels, contains an impressive range in marble, stone and wood. They will enhance any home whether you live in a period house or if you simply want to bring an element of period features to a more modern room design.
